Poem 41

Like Clockwork

the sun rose
and the sun set.
we called it clockwork
because it happened
and never changed.
he laughed
and she would laugh.
i thought it was
natural.
she left
and it broke my heart
just the same
as if i’d been the one
she’d left
behind.
he laughed
and i would laugh.
i treated him
just like the father
he pretended to be,
but as if the word’s meaning
needed to be confirmed,
he left
and it broke my heart
just the same as it did
then
when she left him
for a new world.
they laughed
and we would laugh.
a lot like clockwork,
the time came
and slowly
each one
left.
the sun set.
